COSMOS Certification
The COSMOS Standard was born in January 2011 and is managed by the independent international non-profit association COSMOS-standard AISBL based in Brussels (Belgium). This standard is the result of negotiations started in 2002, after a few large European certification bodies realized that harmonization of their respective certification procedures was essential for a good reading by European consumers. The answer is simple, the aim of the COSMOS standard is to “define the criteria that companies must meet to guarantee consumers that their products are genuine organic or natural cosmetic products, manufactured according to the most demanding sustainability practices possible. "(Https://www.cosmos-standard.org) This COSMOS label therefore aims to promote the use of cosmetic ingredients from organic farming in the first place, the use of production and transformation processes respectful of the environment and human health, as well as their integration into the concept of "green chemistry". To date, more than 24,000 products across 70 countries bear the COSMOS signature. At Thepenier Pharma & Cosmetics, our R&D and regulatory departments systematically inquire about the compliance of our formulations, our production processes and, if the customer so wishes, the packaging chosen for the COSMOS label. The goal is to offer you formulas that are respectful of the environment and your health. There are two levels of certification for a cosmetic product: 1 -COSMOS “ORGANIC” certification, for organic products This certification will be possible for cosmetic products that meet the following criteria: - A minimum of 20% organic ingredients are present in the formula for NON-RINSE products OR 10% minimum organic ingredients for RINSE products. - At least 95% of the plants contained in the formula are organic. Note: Water or minerals are not considered organic because they do not come from agriculture. 2- COSMOS “NATURAL” certification, for natural products. For a cosmetic to be COSMOS NATURAL certified, it must meet the criteria below: - 95 to 100% of the ingredients are of natural origin. Note: An ingredient of natural origin is a natural ingredient (= ingredient such as water, mineral ingredients and cultivated or farmed ingredients), which has undergone a physical or chemical transformation / extraction. Obviously, the COSMOS standard has established a list of authorized chemical and physical processes, respectful of the values stated. During COSMOS certification, all production steps will be verified by an independent certification body: ingredients, formula, packaging, labeling, etc. At each stage, the practices must be in accordance with the requirements of the COSMOS standard. During the audit, the traceability and quality systems are also assessed to ensure compliance with the COSMOS standard. Thus, this approach provides many guarantees to consumers, here are a few examples: - The guarantee of the absence of GMOs and petrochemical ingredients (excluding authorized preservatives): parabens, phenoxyethanol, perfumes and synthetic dyes. - The guarantee of recyclable packaging - Guarantee of respect for biodiversity - The guarantee of production and transformation processes that respect the environment and human health In the end, recognizing a natural cosmetic is not always easy. To be sure of what you are buying, you can look for the presence of the COSMOS NATURAL / COSMOS ORGANIC logo, which guarantees that the cosmetic has been checked and that it conforms to the definition given above.
